Bijnor is a city in Bijnor district, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. Bijnor city is also the district headquarters, which means most government offices of the district are in Bijnor city. Bijnor was established as a district in the newly formed state of Uttar Pradesh, and was placed under the newly formed local governance system of the Moradabad division. In the initial years, Bijnor worked towards building a few roads, schools and healthcare facilities, and as the years passed, Bijnor emerged and developed.

In the 1980’s, Bijnor saw its first major assets developed in its landmarks, particularly the Bijnor Clock Tower which was built in 1926 by Aminuddin Contractor with a foundation given by British Collector Votts. After financial set backs that delayed the city’s opportunity to install its clocks for a few decades, clocks were finally put in 1985.

After the beginnings of the new millennium in the 2000s, Bijnor focused its energy on maintaining elements of historical significance for the city. The Clock Tower was restored, becoming a main representation for the city’s heritage status. At the same time, Indira Park has also seen restoration from a state of neglect, where community residents now have space for recreation as well as family gathering.

During the 2010s, Bijnor faced some serious environmental problems, including flooding caused by erosion of the Ganga embankment that was close to the Rawali barrage. In 2023, Bijnor Jail began a project called “Smritika,” to create a memorial to the 419 freedom fighters, including Sachindranath Bakshi, who were imprisoned there during British colonial control. The project was led by jail superintendent Aditi Srivastava.

The additional growth of National Highway 74 now brings all the trunk cities and their respective districts to Bijnor, including places such as Delhi, Haridwar, and Moradabad. The also growth of Bijnor railway station has created more ease for traveling and trading for the city.
