After India gained its independence in 1947, the city of Azamgarh remained the main district headquarters. The District Magistrate (DM), Collector, and Superintendent of Police (SP) offices were established for law, order, and development of Azamgarh city and its surroundings.

In the decades that followed 1947, Azamgarh city experienced a slow pace of growth. New markets opened, schools and hospitals appeared, and the municipal board began improvements to the supply of water and electricity. The railway and bus stations were new transportation nodes that provided connections to other larger cities from Azamgarh.

Azamgarh city’s greatest impact on the region was the introduction of new roads and expressways in the 2000s and 2010s. The arrival of National Highway 28 provided direct access for Azamgarh city residents to the cities of Gorakhpur, Faizabad, and Lucknow, along with other growing towns. Soon after, two major expressways were completed and opened for travel – the Purvanchal Expressway and Gorakhpur Link Expressway. The Gorakhpur Link Expressway connected near Salarpur in Azamgarh district. It opened in June, 2025, providing fast access via road to Lucknow and Gorakhpur for Azamgarh city residents.
