Following its independence in 1947, Jaunpur city gradually developed under the Uttar Pradesh government. For a long time, Jaunpur city was primarily known for farming land and historic buildings, such as Atala Masjid, Jama Masjid, Lal Darwaza Masjid, and the Shahi Bridge, which were constructed during the Mughal period.
In 2002 a notable rail accident occurred in Jaunpur city. On the 13th of May, 2002, the Shramjeevi Express train derailed near Jaunpur city due to missing fishplates on the track. About twelve passengers died, and around eighty passengers were injured.
Another significant incident occurred in 2005. On the 28th of July, 2005, a bomb exploded on the Shramjeevi Express train near Jaunpur city. The explosion caused thirteen people to lose their lives and around sixty injuries. The investigation revealed that bombs had been placed in the train’s toilet. Later, the security forces arrested the perpetrators associated with the bomb. This incident brought national attention to Jaunpur city.
In 2006, the government took precautionary measures in order to reduce traffic-induced stress on the old Shahi Bridge. On 28 November 2006, Chief Minister Mulayam Singh inaugurated a parallel quick access bridge across the Gomti River adjacent to the Shahi Bridge. The quick access bridge addressed heavy traffic and preserved the old Shahi Bridge from tourist-driven deterioration.
Since 2010, there has been greater connectivity to highways and expressways for Jaunpur city. In 2024, the Dharma Path project was started to connect Jaunpur city with Ayodhya, Varanasi, and Mirzapur. The Dharma Path project includes a four-lane roadway going through Jaunpur city from Hauz to Purvanchal University and from Purvanchal University to Shahganj.
In September 2025, the Government of India approved a new 29 km Jaunpur Bypass. This bypass will follow National Highway-135A and cost Rs 1,895 crores to build. This project was announced by Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari. The Jaunpur Bypass will interface with National Highway-128A, National Highway-731, and National Highway-31. This project is an effort to decrease the number of vehicles traversing through Jaunpur city and improve connectivity with other cities.
Also in 2025, Jaunpur city saw work started on cleaning and rejuvenating the Pili River that flows near the city and joins the Gomti River. This was initiated under the “One District One River” initiative.
