After the independent in 1947, Lucknow city started to develop as the capital of Uttar Pradesh. The Government of Uttar Pradesh established its offices in Lucknow city. In 1967, Lucknow University expanded its academic faculties and became one of the most important centers of higher education in Uttar Pradesh.

In 2021, Lucknow city saw the inauguration of the Purvanchal Expressway by the Prime Minister of India, which enhanced the connectivity of eastern Uttar Pradesh with Lucknow city.
