After India gained independence in 1947, Gonda began growing as part of Uttar Pradesh. One of the most significant events associated with Gonda took place in 1982 when Deputy Superintendent of Police K. P. Singh and twelve villagers died in an encounter at Madhavpur village.

His wife Vibha Singh fought for justice and the Supreme Court ordered a CBI inquiry, and eventually, the CBI court punished eight policemen in 2013, three were sentenced to death and five were given life in prison. This case became one of the most discussed incidents in modern history with regards to Gonda.

Gonda has also experienced flooding due to the Ghaghra and Saryu rivers. For example, in 2011, a Charsari embankment breach caused flooding in hundreds of villages of Gonda district. Again, in 2021, approximately seventeen villages in two tehsils of Gonda were devastated when the rivers crossed the danger mark. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited Gonda for survey and he directed local officials to initiate relief and rescue operations. These annual flood events indicated the necessity of building stronger embankments and more efficient flood control in Gonda.

After independence, the development of roads and highways has altered the scene of Gonda city. National Highway 330 passes through Gonda city, connecting Prayagraj, Ayodhya, and Balrampur and providing access to better transport and trade. Similarly, National Highway 727G also passes through Gonda city, linking it with Babhnan, Harraiya, and adjoining areas.
