Who is the founder of agra

The modern form of Agra city was founded in 1504 by Sultan Sikandar Lodi, who ruled from Delhi and made Agra an important center by building mosques and gardens. Under Emperor Akbar, Agra reached great importance. In 1526, after the First Battle of Panipat, Mughal Emperor Babur captured Agra and made it an important place for the Mughal Empire.

Between 1565 and 1573, Akbar built the massive Agra Fort, which became a stronghold of Mughal power. Fatehpur Sikri included famous monuments like the Buland Darwaza and the Jama Masjid. Akbar also planned and built the nearby city of Fatehpur Sikri between 1571 and 1585.

During the rule of Emperor Jahangir, Agra became a center of art, architecture, and Mughal gardens. Shah Jahan also added beautiful marble palaces and courtyards inside Agra Fort. The greatest glory of Agra came under Emperor Shah Jahan. Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal between 1631 and 1648 in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. His daughter, Jahanara Begum, built the Jama Masjid of Agra in 1648.

When Emperor Aurangzeb came to power, he moved the capital from Agra to Delhi and imprisoned Shah Jahan in Agra Fort. In the 18th century, Agra came under the control of the Jats and later the Marathas. After that, Agra slowly declined in political importance.

Agra Fort became a stronghold for the British, especially during the Revolt of 1857. In 1803, the British East India Company captured Agra from the Marathas and made it an important administrative and military center. After India gained independence in 1947, Agra became part of Uttar Pradesh state.
