The city of Amroha was originally a tehsil of the district of Moradabad. On 15 April, 1997, the Government of Uttar Pradesh formed a separate District, which designated Amroha city as the headquarters. The newly formed district was called Jyotiba Phule Nagar at its inception, but in 2012, the Government of Uttar Pradesh returned the district name to Amroha due to public demand.
In the 1960s and 1970s, Amroha city developed slowly as a busy market town on the banks of the Sot River. Amroha city was known primarily for its mangoes and handicrafts providing the basis for local commercial activity. The population grew and in the 1970s and 1980s the municipal board initiated improvements in roadways, market areas and public infrastructure which began the transformation to modern urban expansion.
Amroha railway station has long served as a vital passenger hub. It is located on the Delhi-Moradabad railway line that was made operational by the Oudh and Rohilkhand Railway. Amroha railway station is serviced by many passenger and express trains. On the road side, a National Highway 9 project greatly improved linking the city of Amroha with Hapur and Moradabad. The national highway was recently made into a six-lane highway passing through the city of Amroha, quite significantly impacting trade and travel.
Since 1997, Amroha city gained further significance when it became the main office for the district administration. Offices like the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police started functioning here. Local politics also created this significance, as the people looking to develop in education, health and road construction pushed for growing amenities in the town
Within the 2020s, expressway projects gave the city of Amroha additional significance. One of the longest planned expressways in India, the Ganga Expressway also passed through the Amroha district.
