When India gained independence in 1947, Amethi was gradually getting developed in the small town category under the purview of Sultanpur district and Raebareli district in the state of Uttar Pradesh. At that time, Amethi did not have its own district administrator working under the Sultanpur district. Amethi was developed as a local market and a government center. The name of Amethi became popular across India in the 1970s and 1980s when the Amethi Lok Sabha seat gained attention from national political leaders.
On 1st July 2010, Amethi was designated as a separate district by merging Amethi, Gauriganj and Musafirkhana tehsils of Sultanpur district and Tiloi tehsil of Raebareli district. The new district was named Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Nagar to begin with but was soon changed back to Amethi.
Politics is one of the important aspects of Amethi’s history. Amethi’s Lok Sabha seat was first represented by Vidya Dhar Bajpai after independence. In 1980, Sanjay Gandhi became the Member of Parliament from Amethi and brought national attention to the city. After his death, Rajiv Gandhi was elected from Amethi in 1981 and served until 1991.
Later, Amethi was represented by Satish Sharma, Sonia Gandhi, and then Rahul Gandhi from 2004 to 2014. In 2019, Smriti Irani of the Bharatiya Janata Party won the seat, which shifted the politics of Amethi. In the most recent 2024 elections, Congress leader Kishori Lal Sharma from Congress won back the Amethi seat.
Amethi saw two significant aviation institutions that brought education and jobs to the region. The Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Akademi was established in 1985 at the Fursatganj Airfield, a flying school that trains pilots for the country. Additionally, the same area saw the development of Rajiv Gandhi National Aviation University in late 2010 to provide higher education in aviation. The government also included Fursatganj Airport in the UDAN regional air service plan during the 2020s, improving air connectivity for Amethi.
National Highway 931 goes through Amethi, connecting it to Pratapgarh, Gauriganj, Musafirkhana, and Jagdishpur. This highway development started through the government’s set plan to improve road connections in Uttar Pradesh in the development of the 2000s and 2010s. These road links helped Amethi connect with other nearby cities like Raebareli and Sultanpur, improving trade and transport.
