Rae Bareli became a part of independent India on 15 August 1947. In 1952 Rae Bareli participated in India’s first general elections, during which people voted under the Election Commission of India, and since then Rae Bareli has sent Members of Parliament to the Lok Sabha.

Rae Bareli gained national attention in 1971, when Indira Gandhi chose Rae Bareli as her Lok Sabha seat. Following her election result in Rae Bareli, a case was filed against her by Raj Narain. In 1975 the Allahabad High Court revoked the Rae Bareli election result, which was a turning point, because after this judgment Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared the Emergency throughout India in June 1975.

The AIIMS Raebareli hospital began outpatient services in 2018 and operates as a full medical college and hospital under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The National Highways Authority of India undertook improvements on the Lucknow – Raebareli route and other highways to create better connectivity. These consist of four-lane projects, bypass roads, and expressway links.
