Chitrakoot is a small city located in the Chitrakoot district of Uttar Pradesh, India. Chitrakoot city serves as the district headquarters. After India became independent in 1947, Chitrakoot was not a separate district. Chitrakoot remained a part of Banda district in Uttar Pradesh for many years. During this time, development was slow, but Chitrakoot stayed an important religious place because of its link with the Ramayana and its many temples and ghats.

A big change came on 6 May 1997, when the Government of Uttar Pradesh created a new district named Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Nagar. This new district was formed by separating Karwi, Mau, Rajapur, and Manikpur areas from Banda district. Soon after, on 4 September 1998, the Government of Uttar Pradesh renamed the district to Chitrakoot district. From this time onwards, Chitrakoot started being recognized as its own district with Karwi as the main town and headquarters.

When it comes to transport and connectivity, major projects came much later. In April 2017, the Uttar Pradesh government announced the Bundelkhand Expressway, which would start from Chitrakoot and connect to the Agra–Lucknow Expressway. On 29 February 2020, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for this project at Gonda village in Chitrakoot. Finally, on 16 July 2022, the Bundelkhand Expressway was officially opened.

In 2025, another big step was taken for better road links. The Government of Uttar Pradesh approved a Chitrakoot Link Expressway of about 15 kilometers. This expressway will connect Chitrakoot city directly to the Bundelkhand Expressway near Bharatkoop.
